It is with great sadness that ICRP marks the passing of Professor Christian Streffer, Member Emeritus of the Main Commission, distinguished radiobiologist, and one of the most influential contributors to modern radiological protection.
Professor Streffer served ICRP with distinction for more than 15 years, helping to shape both the scientific foundations and practical application of the System of Radiological Protection. He was a member of Committee 1 (1993–2001), Chair of Committee 2 (2001–2007), a member of the Main Commission (2001–2009), and subsequently a Member Emeritus. Through these roles, he made substantial contributions to the development of the 2007 Recommendations of ICRP (Publication 103), a cornerstone document that continues to guide radiological protection policy and practice around the world.
A Professor of Medical Radiobiology and former Rector of the University of Essen, Christian Streffer was internationally recognised for his pioneering research into the biological effects of ionising radiation, particularly during prenatal development. His work significantly advanced scientific understanding of radiation risks to the embryo and fetus and helped establish the evidence base for their protection. He also made important contributions to research on chromosomal damage, genomic instability, adaptive responses, and the long-term biological effects of radiation exposure.
Beyond his scientific achievements, Professor Streffer was widely respected for his intellectual rigour, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to international collaboration. He played a key role in bridging radiobiological research and radiological protection policy, ensuring that emerging scientific knowledge was translated into practical recommendations that benefited workers, patients, the public, and the environment.
Colleagues around the world remember Christian Streffer not only as an outstanding scientist, but also as a generous mentor and trusted friend whose guidance helped shape generations of researchers and radiological protection professionals. His contributions have left an enduring mark on the field and will continue to influence radiological protection for many years to come.
ICRP extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, former students, and colleagues. His wisdom, integrity, and lifelong dedication to science and public service will be greatly missed.
