New Opportunities for Organisations to Work Directly with the ICRP Scientific Secretariat

2022-01-31

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) is seeking applications from organisations to loan staff to work in the ICRP Scientific Secretariat, remotely or in the Ottawa office (or a combination of both), full-time or part-time, for a period of one year or more.

As ICRP is a registered charity relying primarily on volunteers, like other ICRP members, incumbents in these positions would continue to be employed and paid by the loaning organisation, although they would report to the ICRP Scientific Secretary & CEO when working on ICRP projects. Working within the Scientific Secretariat, interaction with ICRP Task Groups, Committees, and the Main Commission is part of the job.

Joining the ICRP Scientific Secretariat is an excellent way to learn more about ICRP, understand how we operate, see the full breadth of our activities, increase your network of radiological protection experts world-wide, and learn more about radiological protection. This is especially valuable now, during the review and revision of the System of Radiological Protection. Staff from other organisations are already working with the ICRP Scientific Secretariat, most notably as Interns and Assistant Scientific Secretaries. The new opportunities are outlined below.

Technical Secretary – duties may include organising workshops and webinars, assisting Committees and Task Groups, managing aspects of ICRPædia, and other similar work. Knowledge of radiological protection would be an asset. This position works closely with an Assistant Scientific Secretary or the Head of Stakeholder Engagement and Communications depending on the tasks assigned.

For the following positions, candidates from communications departments would be ideal, creating an opportunity to share experiences and broaden horizons, potentially working together with communications experts from other organisations on ICRP projects.

Technical Writer – duties focus on writing and editing text, often but not always for a general audience to convey technical information in a simple and understandable way. This may be for ICRPædia, news articles, social media, or other communications. Knowledge of radiological protection would be an asset. Strong written English is essential. This position works closely with the Head of Stakeholder Engagement and Communications.

Graphic Designer – duties include development of visual elements for use in documents and online. This may focus on specific designs, e.g., branding of events or Task Groups, social media campaigns, or parts of ICRPædia, and figures to be used in Annals of the ICRP and other communications. Incumbents will be given projects that align with their skill set. Basic knowledge of radiological protection would be an asset. This position works closely with the Brand and Digital Media Specialist.

Social Media Specialist – duties may include implementation of a social media plan by creating and promoting content, analysing engagement, monitoring trends, assessing emerging social media platforms, and assisting with the continuing evolution of ICRP’s social media strategy. Basic knowledge of radiological protection would be an asset. This position works closely with the Head of Stakeholder Engagement and Communications.

Although the working language of ICRP is English, knowledge of other languages in addition would be an asset for all positions.

To apply: Please send a letter on your organisation’s letterhead to ICRP Executive Administrator Lynn Lemaire (Lynn.Lemaire@icrp.org) indicating the position, the name of the candidate, and a brief proposal outlining the period of the staff loan and how much of their time would be dedicated to ICRP, along with a CV of the candidate. The first round of applications considered will be those received by 30 April 2022. Multiple candidates for each position may be selected.
