ICRP Main Commission Meeting

1985 March 25-29 Paris, France

The Commission appointed D. Beninson as the Chairman and the new membership of the Commission and its expert Committees (C1-4) was established for the period 1985-1989.

The Commission reviewed the following reports for purposes of availability to the Commission for background knowledge:

• Some Recent Concepts Used By ICRP
• The Dose Limits
• The Distribution of Risk

The Commission noted that despite the retirement of Dr. Sinclair from ICRU, it was important to maintain strong relations with that organisation. The Commission received a report from a joint TG between ICRP and ICRU titled "Recommendations of the ICRP-ICRU task group on radiation protection quantities, January 31, 1985” No decision was reached on how to publish the report.

The Commission was presented work progress updates from Committees 1-4.

C1 – Updates to numerous reports was given about several projects relevant to C1 related to radiation dose to organs, development, and hereditary effects. C1 hopes that the Commission will make a statement clarifying importance of hormesis in radiation protection.
C2 – Much discussion was held regarding two reports on Report on doses to patients from radiopharmaceuticals. The Commission confirmed that both reports will be published separately.
C3 – The Commission accepted C3’s proposal to prepare statements on dose reduction to patients and potentially dangerous radiological practices. Additional reports were presented to the Commission which prompted a discussion regarding how to improve circulation of radiation protection relevant to nuclear medicine to developing countries.
C4 – The Commission reviewed several reports and the following reports were given permission to proceed to a mail ballot for final adoption: Report on radiation protection in mines and Task group report on waste disposal

The Commission prepared a statement from the Paris meeting on four topics:

• dose limits for members of the public
• the quality factor for neutrons
• dangerous radiological practices
• reduced doses to patients

The next meeting of the Commission is scheduled for October 1985 in Eastbourne, UK.
