ICRP Main Commission Meeting

1985 October 27 – November 7 Eastbourne, UK

The Commission reviewed several reports and adopted Data for use in protection against external radiation provided that minor edits were made. The following reports were considered but due to outstanding issues and concerns could not be adopted:

• The metabolism of plutonium and related elements
• Exposure and lung cancer risk of the general public from inhaled radon daughters
• The quality factor in radiation protection

The Commission requested production of a report to provide guidance on Commission’s responsibilities as an employer and terms of employment for employees.

The Rules of ICRP were agreed to and communicated to the ISR via written notice.

A formal procedure was developed and approved with respect to making statements.

The Commission agreed for C3 and C4 to draft a statement regarding Radon Spas.

The Commission decided to devote the next two years to issues related to revision of the Basic recommendations of the Commission.

The Commission approved of sharing project information with ICRU to better coordinate activities between the two organisations.

The Commission heard the following progress updates from Committees (C) 1-4:

C1 – The Commission approved of the formation of a TG for The biological basis of dose limitation to the skin and RBE values for non-stochastic effects.
C2 – Progress updates on several reports was presented to the Commission. Some questions were raised regarding the appropriateness of some of the work group classifications but no formal objections were made.
C3 – The formation of a new TG was approved by the Commission for Radiological protection of medical workers. Reports related to protection of practitioners, patients, and volunteers in medical protection was presented.
C4 – The Commission approved formation of TG for Monitoring of workers for internal contamination. C4 presented its wish to provide input to C3 on questions of optimisation. This was approved by the Commission.

The next meeting of ICRP is scheduled in Argentina, 1988. It is hoped that organisations that were not able to attend this meeting will endeavor to attend the next.
