ICRP Main Commission Meeting

1983 October 10-13 Washington, USA

The Commission was presented the following reports for review, feedback, and possible adoption:

• Principles for Limiting Exposure of the Public to Natural Sources of Radiation
• Policy on the Limitation of Probabilistic Event
• The Use of Single Values to Represent Distributions
• Techniques Other Than Cost-Benefit Analysis for Optimisation

Of the reports, only the first was adopted by the Commission for publication provided that the discussed revisions were made.

Individuals present at the meeting expressed anxiety regarding the ICRP’s method of idea development and subsequent release in a formal publication without prior notification to experts in radiation protection. The Commission agreed to notify journals of topics that the ICRP is researching for the future.

The Commission received work updates from Committees 1-4:

C1 – It was decided that current knowledge of radiation risks does not warrant changing risk coefficients in ICRP Publication 26.
C2 – The Commission approved the following proposals: A statement on the topic of dose calculations, a new TG to revise the lung model, to keep the Reference Man updates, and for C2 to meet in Leningrad in 1985
C3 – No decisions made by the Commission.
C4 – The Commission decided for a revised version of Major concepts and quantities used by ICRP to be published. The Commission approved a statement to clarify ICRP intentions regarding annual doses in a work force. Finally, the Commission released several statements regarding the application of Publication 26 and they are as follows: ICRP-26 is adequate for the present, liability assignment is not a matter for ICRP, and trivial quantities were sufficiently important to warrant a place on the agenda for Stockholm.

The Commission received progress updates from several TGs on the topic of revising past ICRP publications (7, 10, 10A, and 24) and other topics. No reports were adopted by the Commission.

The Commission decided to rescind its rule on not inviting individuals to ICRP meetings.

The commission agreed that future ICRP meetings should take place in locations where all member can attend.

The Commission agreed to meet in Paris for March 25 1985.
