ICRP Main Commission Meeting

1975 April 7-16 Brighton, UK

The Commission agreed to a proposal by Pergamon Press that future ICRP reports should be published in a new Journal of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, to be edited by the Scientific Secretary.

WHO confirmed ICRP’s relationship as a non-governmental body.

A discussion was held regarding rules of future elections of the Commission. It was agreed that future reports from Committees to the Commission should not include suggestions about membership.

The Commission heard update on Revision of ICRP-9. The Commission instructed the drafting group on a number of points related to quality factors for types of radiation, and dose equivalent limits for different areas of the body. No recommendation was made for a whole body dose limit. Decision on inclusion of a new Chapter (F) would be decided at a later date.

The Report on the Quantification of Harm was agreed by the Commission to be incorporated in part in the new recommendations.

The Commission was presented updates regarding the work of Committees 1-4 and made the following decisions:

C1 – The Commission agreed to consider the possibility of issuing a statement on Inhaled Radioactive Particulates.

C2 – The Commission approved C2’s proposal to consider the trachea, bronchi, pulmonary region, and lymph nodes as one organ of mass 1000 g for purposes of radiation protection to which the dose limit for lung will apply. It was also agreed that a body content of 0.1 microgram of Ra-226 should serve as the basis for establishing dose equivalent limit for endosteal tissue. No definitive conclusion was reached by the Commission on the recommendation of an upper limit of 2 WL as suggested in Task Group on Radon and Thoron.

C3 – The Commission heard progress updates on several ICRP publications.

C4 – The Commission agreed to vote via mail ballot to decide on adoption of Emergency and Accidental Exposures of Workers.

The Commission agreed that a more formal liaison with ICRU would be desirable. It was therefore suggested that individuals comprising of the group for Determination of Dose Equivalent would serve as members in a liaison committee between ICRP and ICRU

The next meeting of the Commission is scheduled for Whiteshell, Manitoba in 1976.
