ICRP Main Commission Meeting

1973 April 9-17 Brighton, UK

The Commission discussed matters related to the election of new Committee and Commission members. With two Commission members resigning, new members were elected and the full list of ICRP membership is listed in the meeting minutes. Invitations were also sent out to invite individuals to the Committees. It was decided not to include an updated membership list of the ICRP to the International Congress of Radiology prior to its adoption.

The Commission agreed for the future not to invite individuals with long term commitments with international organisations.

The Commission was presented updates regarding the work of Committees 1-4 and made the following decisions:

C1 – The Commission agreed that extensive review of Balance Between Genetic Effects in the First Generation Versus Later Generations would be required before ICRP were to stand behind it. C1 proposed several potential topics for future work and the Commission selected the following for immediate consideration: influence of factors such as protraction of exposure, and LET, on genetic and somatic hazards for purposes of radiation protection.

C2 – Updates on several C2 reports were made. The Commission reaffirmed its decision to publish the report on Reference Man in the ICRP Publications, blue covers.

C3 – The Commission sent a draft statement on trends in diagnostic radiology and practice of ICRP-15,16 to the Scientific Secretary for review. Final approval would be made by the members of Committee 3. No agreement was made regarding a query by C3 on the topic of the possibility of deriving a more appropriate quantity than genetically significant dose for assessing significance of dose.

C4 – The Commission decided to vote on final adoption of Review of Implications of Para 52 ICRP-9 via mail ballot once it was completed. The proposal to create a working party on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Explosives was accepted.

The Commission decided not to issue a joint statement with ICRU regarding a statement on dose equivalent, to replace Section 11B of ICRU Report 19.

The next meeting of the Commission was scheduled for March 11 – 13, 1974. The next meeting of the Commission and its Committees was scheduled in two years’ time.
