ICRP Main Commission Meeting

1971 April 15-23 London, UK

Matters of finance were discussed amongst the Commission, especially with respect to the necessity of grants being made to the Commission directly, and a draft letter to be sent to the publisher (Pergamon) to negotiate for royalties and sales of ICRP publications.

A request from ICAO to utilise new radiation imaging techniques was discussed and approved as long as exposure was limited to less than 1 mR to any part of body.

The Commission received updates from Commission TG’s The Basis of the ICRP Dose Limits, Risk, Non-Ionizing Radiations, and Estimates Applied to Clinical Uses of Radiation. A background paper will be prepared for the Commission for the next meeting regarding the latter report.

The Commission discussed a proposal to expand the ICRP’s scope into non-ionising radiation. No concrete decision was reached on this matter therefore the status quo was maintained –no expansion into the field of non-ionising radiation-.

The Commission agreed it was not appropriate for the Chairman to contribute to a review paper sponsored by IAEA.

The Commission was presented updates regarding the work of Committees 1-4 and made the following decisions:

C1 – The Commission approved of membership changes to TG on Epidemiological Surveys of Human populations in light of recent difficulties in preparing reports.

C2 – The Commission agreed to publish Reference Man in ICRP series, blue covers. In reviewing Radon, Thoron, and their Daughter Products, several members of the Commission requested inclusion of a graph relating to incidence of lung cancer vs exposure. No decision was reached regarding recommendation of annual or lifetime dose limits.

C3 – The Commission decided to release a statement regarding the topics presented in Dose from Consumer Products and dose limits described in Exposure from Intra-oral X-ray Tubes.

C4 – The Commission approved of membership changes to TG on Revision of ICRP-5. Further progress on current reports would be communicated to the Commission later in the year.

The Commission decided to meet with all its Committees in April 1973, London UK.
