ICRP Main Commission Meeting

1970 May 11-13 London, UK

The Commission appointed a TG to review proposals made in ICRP-14 and produce a report considering how the proposals might affect the Commission’s recommendations.

It was agreed the Commission would not enter into a detailed discussion submitted by Gofman and Tamplin from the U.S Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy in order to stay out of national affairs.

The commission agreed to publish report on Protection of the Patient in Radionuclide Investigations in the ICRP Series, in blue covers.

The Commission was presented current updates regarding the work of Committees 1-4 and made the following decisions:

C1 – The Commission invited Dr. W. J. Blair to take over chairmanship vacated by Dr. Casarett.

C2 – The Commission agreed, based on TG update regarding lifetime dose limits, that the primary goal of ICRP was to state value of adequately safe level, and for national authorities to decide what value to apply. Regarding the Committee 2 Report, the Commission agreed to adopt the proposal for the dose limit to endosteal cells to be 15 rems per year. Additionally, C2 should include a value for the Derived Working Limit in air based on 2000 hours.

C3 – The Commission approved Report of Committee 3 on Protection Against Ionizing Radiation from External Sources for final editing and submission to the publisher. Much discussion was held regarding the roles of C3/C4. Other discussion was held regarding ICRP’s role in improving radiation treatment procedures. It was agreed to return to this topic later.

C4 – Progress updates were provided regarding C4 reports and project deadlines. No decisions were made by the Commission.

The Commission decided that unless a member of ICRP was officially nominated by the Commission to be a spokesperson, any advice they give should be given as an opinion in a personal capacity and not to reflect the views of ICRP.

The Commission agreed to host another meeting without committees in May or June 1972.
