ICRP Main Commission Meeting Geneva 1974

Summary

The ICRP Main Commission met at the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) from March 11-13, 1974.

David Sowby announces that the ICRP election procedures are to be revised in consultation with the Electoral Reform Society. The procedure is to be finalized and presented to the Main Commission at a later meeting. The main purpose of the revision is to ensure that the elections are not influence by external influences or constraints and that the ICRP can elect new member more easily.

Sowby also circulate a document summarizing the ICRP position on the use of SI units in its publication. The formal decision is to gradual transition to the use of SI units. The ICRP also sends a copy of the position document to the ICRU along with a request for the creation of scientific prefixes to denote 10^15 and 10^18, the prefixes ultimately decided upon are Peta and Exa respectively.
