Main Commission Meeting Vienna 2004

Summary

The Main Commission met in Vienna, Austria from April 23rd-24th 2004.

The Commission approved for publishing a report on Release of Patients after Therapy with Unsealed Radionuclides. The full report can be found in Publication 94. The report includes detailed information regarding iodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Key points include:

  • Patients receiving iodine therapy contain an activity on order of magnitude of PBq.
  • In the United States, at least 10,000 iodine therapy treatments occur daily.

Also approved for web consultation was a report on Protecting against Radiation Exposure in the Aftermath of a Radiological Attack. One of the focuses of the report was the importance of preventive counter-measures, which can reduce the effects of an attack by as much as 1000 times. The report also went into details about medical treatments that are available after a radiological attack. The full report can be read in ICRP Publication 96.

The Commission reviews the first draft of 2007 Recommendations of ICRP. The Recommendations are intended as an update to the 1990 Recommendations. The new recommendations are to reflect new scientific data that has become available since the 1990’s as well as take into account new trends in radiation safety standards. The revised recommendations also aim to improve the presentation and streamline ICRP Recommendations. The 2007 Recommendations can be read in ICRP Publication 103.
