Simon Bouffler obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of Southampton in 1981 and a PhD in 1984. The subject of his PhD thesis was the interaction between cadmium and genotoxins. He started his career as a post-doctoral research assistant in the Cancer Research Campaign Mammalian Cell DNA repair research group in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge. In 1991 he moved to the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) where he has remained since. He is now Deputy Director, Radiation Protection Sciences at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA which subsumed NRPB and its successor organisations the Health Protection Agency and Public Health England).
The main research interests of Simon Bouffler concern the mechanisms of radiation carcinogenesis and variation in radiation sensitivity. He has also interests in the effects of UV light, electromagnetic fields and chemical agents. He also has interests in the mechanisms of cataract and circulatory disease development following radiation exposure.
He has significant involvement in European Union funded research through contributions to multiple radiation protection research partnerships, currently Pianoforte and co‑ordination of RISK-IR. His research has also received support from the US DoE low dose program and UK research charities.
Dr Bouffler has been a member of the UK delegation to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) since 2008 and UK representative to the Committee from 2013.
